FAQ

  • Private lessons are the best way for skaters to improve in a timely manner. Personalized, one-on-one instruction allows for skaters’ individual skating needs to be met, nurtured, and adjusted.

  • This all depends on your skater!

When I first start working with a skater, I sit down with them and their parents to discuss their desired skating goals. Training requirements to meet those goals are then implemented based on the skater’s goals.

  • Yes!

Skaters’ own ice time out of a lesson is super important for implementing and cementing what has been learned during lessons. It helps to polish corrections of skills and also allows the skater to become more familiar with corrections, adjustments, and movements.

  • Yes!

All skaters are set up with a skating journal to help keep track of how to practice on their own and what to practice during that time. To start, individual practice time the same length as their lesson is a good place to start.

  • Competing is a great opportunity for skaters to perform and showcase their skills against other skaters. Whether a skater wants to compete on a more national circuit to skaters who want to compete more locally, skaters can put their abilities to the test for a chance to earn medals, awards, and challenge themselves.

  • Testing is how skaters move up in levels. Not only does it help develop valuable and essential skills, but it also puts skaters on the path to earning a Gold Medal (the highest honor in figure skating) once all levels are completed. This accomplishment is highly regarded in the skating community, greatly acknowledged for school applications, and also sets skaters up on the path for success if they choose to become professional performers or coaches in the future.

  • No!

Skaters do not have to compete or test. If they would like to take a more recreational approach to their skating, I’ll be right there with them every step of the way to make their skating journey fun and educational!

  • Joining a skating club offers some great opportunities:

    • Club affiliation when testing/competing can avoid potential additional fees that are added for “Individual Members”

    • Club members receive discounted ice time (through Skate Great ice as a Skating Club of WNY member)

    • Great way to make friends and attend club events such as parties, fundraisers, skates, and volunteering

  • Off-ice training helps develop and polish on-ice skills!

Participating in this kind of training helps to develop strength, extensions, lines and artistry, jump technique, musical interpretation, style, and flexibility.
